Calculate the total number of stitches in your cross stitch pattern and determine actual stitches to work based on coverage percentage.
Total stitches = pattern width × pattern height. This represents every square in your pattern grid.
Actual stitches to work adjusts for patterns with empty background space. A pattern with 80% coverage means you'll only stitch 80% of the total grid squares.
Once you know your stitch count, use these calculators to plan the rest:
Multiply your pattern's width by height in stitches. A 100×150 stitch pattern has 15,000 total stitches (100 × 150 = 15,000). Adjust for coverage if your pattern has lots of unstitched background.
Count the maximum width and height of your pattern from your chart. Multiply them: Total Stitches = Width × Height. For actual stitched count, multiply by coverage percentage (typically 70-95%).
Look at your pattern chart's grid dimensions. The chart shows width and height in stitches (e.g., 100w × 150h). Multiply these numbers for total grid stitches. Not all squares will be stitched—some are background.
Small: under 10,000 stitches. Medium: 10,000-50,000 stitches. Large: 50,000-150,000 stitches. Epic: over 150,000 stitches. Large projects can take 100-300+ hours depending on complexity.
Stitch count indicates project length, not difficulty. A 50,000-stitch pattern with simple blocks is easier than a 20,000-stitch pattern with 100 colors and lots of fractional stitches. Consider both count and complexity.
