Complete Guide to Calculating Pattern and Fabric Size
Understanding cross stitch sizing is essential for planning your project. This guide explains how stitch count and fabric count work together to determine your finished design size and total fabric requirements.
The Basic Sizing Formula
Cross stitch sizing follows a simple mathematical relationship:
Finished Size (inches) = Stitch Count ÷ Fabric Count
For example:
- 140 stitches ÷ 14-count Aida = 10 inches
- 140 stitches ÷ 18-count Aida = 7.8 inches
- 200 stitches ÷ 16-count Aida = 12.5 inches
Understanding Stitch Count
Stitch count refers to the width and height of your pattern measured in individual cross stitches. This information appears on your pattern chart—typically labeled as "100w × 150h" meaning 100 stitches wide by 150 stitches tall.
Total pattern area = Width × Height. A 100×150 stitch pattern contains 15,000 total stitches (though many may be unstitched background).
Understanding Fabric Count
Fabric count indicates how many stitches fit into one linear inch of fabric:
- 11-count Aida = 11 stitches per inch
- 14-count Aida = 14 stitches per inch (most popular)
- 16-count Aida = 16 stitches per inch
- 18-count Aida = 18 stitches per inch
- 28-count Linen (over 2) = 14 stitches per inch
- 32-count Linen (over 2) = 16 stitches per inch
Common Pattern Size Examples
100×100 Stitch Pattern
| Fabric Count | Finished Size (Inches) | Finished Size (CM) |
|---|---|---|
| 11-count Aida | 9.1 × 9.1 in | 23.1 × 23.1 cm |
| 14-count Aida | 7.1 × 7.1 in | 18.1 × 18.1 cm |
| 16-count Aida | 6.3 × 6.3 in | 15.9 × 15.9 cm |
| 18-count Aida | 5.6 × 5.6 in | 14.1 × 14.1 cm |
150×150 Stitch Pattern
| Fabric Count | Finished Size (Inches) | Finished Size (CM) |
|---|---|---|
| 11-count Aida | 13.6 × 13.6 in | 34.6 × 34.6 cm |
| 14-count Aida | 10.7 × 10.7 in | 27.2 × 27.2 cm |
| 16-count Aida | 9.4 × 9.4 in | 23.9 × 23.9 cm |
| 18-count Aida | 8.3 × 8.3 in | 21.2 × 21.2 cm |
200×200 Stitch Pattern
| Fabric Count | Finished Size (Inches) | Finished Size (CM) |
|---|---|---|
| 11-count Aida | 18.2 × 18.2 in | 46.2 × 46.2 cm |
| 14-count Aida | 14.3 × 14.3 in | 36.3 × 36.3 cm |
| 16-count Aida | 12.5 × 12.5 in | 31.8 × 31.8 cm |
| 18-count Aida | 11.1 × 11.1 in | 28.2 × 28.2 cm |
Calculating Total Fabric Requirements
Your finished design size is the stitched area only. To frame or mount your work, you need extra unstitched fabric around the edges.
Recommended border margins:
- Small projects (under 8 inches): 2 inches per side
- Medium projects (8-14 inches): 3 inches per side
- Large projects (over 14 inches): 4 inches per side
Total fabric formula:
Fabric Width = Design Width + (2 × Border Margin)
Fabric Height = Design Height + (2 × Border Margin)
Example: A 10 × 14 inch design with 3-inch borders needs:
- Width: 10 + (2 × 3) = 16 inches
- Height: 14 + (2 × 3) = 20 inches
- Total fabric cut: 16 × 20 inches
Working with Centimeters
To convert inches to centimeters: multiply by 2.54
To convert centimeters to inches: divide by 2.54
Example:
- 10 inches × 2.54 = 25.4 cm
- 30 cm ÷ 2.54 = 11.8 inches
