Cross Stitch Calculator - Complete Project Planning Tool
The Cross Stitch Calculator is a free, comprehensive planning tool that calculates everything you need before starting your cross stitch project: finished design size, fabric cut dimensions, DMC floss requirements, stitching time estimates, and material costs.
How to Use the Cross Stitch Calculator
1. Enter Pattern Dimensions
Input your pattern's width and height in stitches (found on your chart's grid or pattern key).
2. Select Fabric Type & Count
Choose Aida (over 1) or Evenweave/Linen (over 2) and select your fabric count from 11ct to 36ct.
3. Add Border Margin
Set border allowance for framing (we recommend 3 inches per side for most projects).
Understanding Cross Stitch Calculations
Cross stitch sizing is based on simple fabric mathematics:
- Finished Size: Pattern Stitches ÷ Fabric Count = Design Size in Inches
- Fabric Cut: Finished Size + (2 × Border Margin) = Total Fabric Needed
- Metric Conversion: Inches × 2.54 = Centimeters
- Linen Over 2: 28-count Linen ÷ 2 = 14 stitches per inch (same as 14ct Aida)
Fabric Count Guide: Aida vs Evenweave vs Linen
Understanding fabric count helps you choose the right material for your project detail level and finished size:
| Fabric Count | Stitches per Inch | Best For |
| 11-count Aida | 11 | Beginners, large designs, children's projects |
| 14-count Aida | 14 | Most popular, general cross stitch, good detail |
| 16-count Aida | 16 | Detailed designs, smaller finished size |
| 18-count Aida | 18 | Fine detail, miniatures, experienced stitchers |
| 28-count Linen | 14 (over 2) | Same size as 14ct Aida, softer texture |
| 32-count Linen | 16 (over 2) | Same size as 16ct Aida, elegant finish |
