Cross Stitch Calculator started with a familiar problem: standing in the fabric shop, pattern in hand, wondering just how big this design would end up - and whether that single skein of crimson was going to be enough.
Our story
We're stitchers first and tool-builders second. After one too many projects cut a little too close to the edge (literally), we put the math we kept scribbling on the back of a floss label into one simple place: finished size, fabric to cut, floss to buy, and the hours of cozy stitching ahead.
What we believe
- Good tools get out of the way. You type in your pattern size and get an answer in inches and centimeters - no spreadsheets required.
- Estimates should be honest. Every number is a guideline based on real-world floss usage, and we always recommend buying an extra skein of key colors - because running out mid-border is a special kind of heartbreak.
- Your project is yours. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your inputs stay on your device; nothing about your pattern is uploaded anywhere. Read the Privacy Policy for the details.
The stitching math, in short
Fabric count is the number of threads (or Aida blocks) per inch. On Aida you stitch over one block; on evenweave and linen you usually stitch over two threads - so 28-count evenweave gives the same finished size as 14-count Aida. Divide your stitch count by the effective density to get the finished design size, add a border on every side for framing, and you know exactly what to cut.
For floss, a standard 8-meter skein of six-strand floss covers roughly 1,000 full cross stitches on 14-count fabric with two strands - a little less on coarser fabric or with more strands, a little more on fine fabric.
