How to Use the DMC Floss & Skein Estimator

1. Enter Pattern Stitch Count

Input your chart's grid width and height in stitches (e.g. 150 × 200).

2. Pick Fabric & Strands

Choose your fabric count (14ct Aida, 28ct Linen over 2, etc.) and how many strands you stitch with.

3. Set Color Count

Enter how many distinct DMC colors your chart uses, then read your per-color and total skein needs.

About the DMC Floss & Skein Estimator

The DMC Floss & Skein Estimator converts your pattern's stitch count into exact 8-meter (8.7-yard) DMC skein requirements. Running out of thread mid-project is a needleworker's nightmare - dye lots shift subtly between batches, and a half-used skein rarely matches a fresh one perfectly.

This tool applies the standard needlework benchmark: one 6-strand DMC skein covers roughly 1,000 full cross stitches on 14-count fabric with 2 strands. From there it scales for fabric density, strand count, and your stitched-coverage percentage, then tells you the skeins needed per color and the total you should buy.

Floss Calculation Formulas

Stitches per Skein = 72 × Effective Fabric Count × (2 ÷ Strands)

Stitched Stitches = Stitches Wide × Stitches Tall × (Coverage ÷ 100)

Skeins per Color = Round Up(Stitched Stitches ÷ Stitches per Skein)

Total Skeins to Buy = Skeins per Color × Number of Colors

Effective fabric count is the raw count for Aida (14 → 14) and half the count for Linen/Evenweave stitched over 2 threads (28 → 14).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many stitches does one DMC skein cover?

One 8-meter 6-strand DMC skein covers roughly 1,000 full cross stitches on 14-count Aida with 2 strands. Coarser fabric or more strands lowers the yield; finer fabric or fewer strands raises it.

How do strands change my skein needs?

Three strands use 50% more thread than two; one strand uses half as much. The estimator scales your yield automatically.

Should I buy extra skeins of key colors?

Yes - buy 1-2 extra skeins of dominant background and outline colors to cover thread waste, knotting, and dye-lot variance.

What is a DMC skein made of?

Standard DMC Mouline floss is 100% mercerized cotton, 6 separable strands, 8 meters long.

Does coverage percentage matter?

Yes. If large areas of your chart are unstitched background, lowering coverage from 100% gives a more honest thread estimate.
