Cross Stitch Hoop Size Calculator
Find the right embroidery hoop size for your project based on your finished design dimensions and preferred working margin.
How to Choose a Hoop Size
Your hoop should be large enough to hold your design plus 1-2 inches of fabric around the edges for comfortable stitching. Too small and you'll need to move the hoop frequently; too large and the fabric may not stay taut.
Common Hoop Sizes
- 3-4 inch: Small motifs, ornaments, patches
- 5-6 inch: Standard small projects, cards
- 7-8 inch: Medium projects, most patterns
- 10-12 inch: Larger designs, samplers
- 14-16 inch: Very large projects
Alternatives to Round Hoops
For very large or rectangular projects, consider:
- Q-Snap frames: Square/rectangular plastic frames in various sizes
- Scroll frames: Adjustable height, good for large vertical designs
- Floor stands: Hands-free stitching for any hoop size
